Having a teenager is hard enough as it is. Getting to know them on a deeper level is even harder when they already donโt want to talk. I made a list of the best ice-breaker type questions you can ask your teenager to get the ball rolling. It is a great mix between asking a fun question but also good questions to get them thinking.
Asking questions is a great way to show that you care as a parent. The best thing you can do for your kids is give them a safe space to talk to you.
Different age groups obviously respond differently to thought-provoking questions. Older kids can answer deep questions and really get to thinking about their answers.
Always let them know that there are no wrong answers. And that they can always say how they really feel. This is a way to build strong bonds between the two of you.

Tips on Getting Your Kids to Talk to You
Kids are people. They just have smaller bodies.
Do you want to talk to people who arenโt ACTUALLY interested in what you have to say? I donโt think so. You probably try to avoid talking to them. Your kids know when you are being genuine.
So my #1 tip to get your kids to talk to you is to talk to them like they are REAL people. If you do this, they might actually want to talk to you.
Even if your kids are toddlers, they still understand what you are saying. They know if you respect them or if you treat them like they donโt know anything. This might be a hard truth, but it is the truth.
The other day I was in a coffee shop and I heard this lady talking to her kids in the most demeaning way. She was treating them worse than I would treat my worst enemy. And I donโt doubt she thinks they are stupid and donโt understand.
But, I know they do. No wonder they were giving her such a hard time. I wouldnโt listen to anyone who treated me that way. Would you???
Soโฆ. why would you expect your kids to listen to you when you treat them like they canโt listen???
My #2 tip is to talk to them about things that they WANT to talk about. As a mom or parent, you know what your kids are interested in. If you are only talking to them about what YOU are interested in, they arenโt going to want to talk to you.
Again, this goes to point #1 where you need to treat them like a person. How would you feel if someone only talked about their problems to you over and over and never asked about you. Or never asked something about you but only talked about what they cared about.
You probably wouldnโt talk to that person very often. Just because they are your kids, doesnโt mean they donโt feel the same way.
My #3 tip is that YOU set the TONE for the conversation and the environment. If your kid thinks or knows you are going to get mad at what they say, they are not going to want to talk to you. If you donโt create an environment for your kids to tell you things, they wonโt.
Even when my kids were little I would say, โYou can tell mommy and I will listen. I wonโt get mad.โ and they would tell me. But it was on me to let them and to keep my word. They are smart and they know if you are going to or not. And they WONT forget.
The Most Important Rule for Kids of Any Age
Growing up, I had one rule:
If you are honest, come to me, and tell me before I find out, you will NOT be in trouble. But, if I find out or you lie, there will be consequences.
This rule was extremely important and difficult for both me and my parents. But, you know what?? The first time I did something really really bad, I went into my parents room and told them. They didnโt get mad and kept their word.
And I knew from that point on that I could trust them. I could count on them to listen. And I didnโt hide things from them.
As a mom, this is the most important thing I want to teach my kids. It is not easy at all for your kid to tell you or for you not to get upset.
BUT, it is much worse for them to hide everything from you. This leaves you in a position where you canโt help them. And they are going to go to other people or the internet for help. Which is not what you want as their parent.
